for by a tree

if I told you the story of a start
that has no beginning
told it in whole not in part
and no end would be bringing

would you be sown by its sum
for whatsoever you treasure
you shall become
and by its unknowable measure
be undone

for in its telling and beholding
conceives a conception and birth
a story perpetually unfolding
sentenced chapter and verse

and if from its plot you’re impelled,
nurtured by its burgeoning seed
from whence it indwelled
so matures then a vision freed
for by a tree was a forest beheld

but what if what you sought
sought you first
and with its priceless cost
you were bought
so the price you paid would not be lost

would you then lift up your sight
and so treasure your night
to behold what’s been let
the fulfilled measure of fully paid debt
